Slow Gardening Texas Style

Make plans to join us on Saturday, October 14, for a unique day-long educational event sponsored by the Dallas County Master Gardener Association and Dallas College featuring well-known horticulturists Felder Rushing and Callie Works-Leary (see bios below).  The $20 cost of registration includes lunch. The class is open to the public!

10:00 Doors open.

10:30 Felder Rushing introduces us to “Slow Gardening, Texas Style – All Senses, All Seasons” – covers great plants (emphasizing natives and tried-and-true heirlooms), low input gardening, attracting wildlife, sharing plants with others, and appreciating maverick gardeners.

12:00 Lunch

1:00 Felder Rushing presents “Grow Anything IN Anything” – bold, beautiful and wacky containers, from recycled pots to raised beds and easy water gardens.

2:30 Callie Works-Leary teaches us to “Grow Your Own: Strategies for Productive Food Gardening in North Texas” – turn your dream of growing your own food into a reality.  Learn the science behind high-yield, urban vegetable gardens and the simple techniques that make it possible to eat homegrown food year- round.

Dallas County Horticulture Agent Katerina Graham has approved 4.5 hours of Continuing Education for Dallas County Master Gardeners attending the event.

Speaker Bios:
Felder Rushing is an 11th generation southern gardener who divides his time between a celebrated cottage garden in Jackson, Mississippi, and a terrace herb garden in Lancashire, England. An award-winning author of over 30 gardening books, Felder founded the Mississippi Master Gardener program as well the international Slow Gardening movement which celebrates finding and following garden bliss regardless of skills or abilities.  He hosts a weekly call-in NPR gardening program, has weekly syndicated garden columns, and has contributed countless articles and photographs to many magazines including Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Fine Gardening, Organic Gardening, and the National Geographic. He lectures from coast to coast and overseas, bringing a laid-back attitude toward gardening.

Callie Works-Leary is a professional garden educator and the founder of The Dallas Garden School.  Her mission is to teach North Texans how to grow healthy productive gardens that fill their lives with joy and purpose.  She has more than 18 years of personal and professional gardening experience and specializes in cut flowers, naturalistic perennial gardens, and urban food gardening. Callie is a Dallas County Master Gardener. She shares educational and inspirational content to more than 70,000 followers on Instagram: @thedallasgardenschool
