Ruby Young

Ruby Young Personalized STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Academy is part of the Desoto Independent School District. It has an expansive school garden that was started in 1995. At first, the garden had 6 raised beds and an arbor built by parent volunteers. Now the garden has over 20 raised beds, a certified butterfly garden, a large greenhouse, a fruit tree orchard, a pond, a teaching pavilion, a wild space where nature is allowed to take over, and a medicinal garden. The garden covers approximately an acre with lots of room for planting and activities.

Students visit the garden on a weekly basis to learn about plants. They learn to propagate, plant, and water plants, maintain existing plants, and harvest when needed. Dallas County Master Gardeners (DCMG) and other volunteers provide garden lessons and maintenance.

Parents and teachers come together several days each year to work on special projects in the garden. DCMG and other volunteers meet weekly on Tuesday mornings year-round to complete general garden work. New faces are always welcome.

A plant sale is held twice a year and proceeds are used to purchase supplies for the garden. Local organizations have also contributed to the garden over the years, and grants have been awarded. Eagle Scouts provide support by completing projects in the garden.
