Taste of the Gardens Lakewood Celebrates Native and Adapted Plants

“Gardeners are stewards of plants, which makes them stewards of everything.” —Doug Tallamy

Our heartfelt thanks to all 29 amazing volunteers, including 6 students (Class of 2025), 4 interns (Class of 2024, about to graduate!), 1 retired Lakewood teacher and 18 certified Master Gardeners! Everyone generously gave of their time and expertise to add native and adapted plants as well as annuals that will provide shelter and food to the many pollinators that visit the Lakewood Elementary School gardens! Together, we are providing a shining example of the importance of environmental stewardship to our students, faculty, and community!

After our work was done, we were so privileged to learn more about native and adapted plants and wildflowers from our fellow Master Gardener Judy Carpenter, who oversaw the installation of the LOLA Brick Road Pollinator Garden, our newest garden in front of the school. She stressed the advantages of native and adapted plants in the landscape, including drought tolerance, pest resistance, and their superior nectar and pollen.

Thank you so much, Judy, for sharing your wisdom and experience! Thanks also to Janet Lane and Lorraine Hellinghausen for organizing this wonderful morning of learning and earning hours together while getting to know each other better.

PLEASE come visit us again soon!
