Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle!

What better time than the start of a new year to turn our attention to repurposing items we can use in the garden? Over a period of many months, a very old shed (possibly original and 70+ years old) has been transformed into a beautiful, organized and much-needed storage area for our supplies at the Lakewood Elementary garden!

Special thanks to DCMG Kimberly Minear and her neighbor for repainting the dingy metal with a soft blue paint covered with gorgeous butterflies, birds and blooms! We sincerely appreciate the valiant efforts of PTA President Shannon Stuart and her father for removing the contents of the shed and outfitting it with brand new pegboard and shelving! Yesterday the garden supplies were moved into their “new” luxurious quarters (thank you, DCMGs Susan Shock, Mark Jones and Nicole Jones!).

Winter can also be a great time to review the past year in your garden journal. Look at what looked and what didn’t. What plants died and need to be replaced? Look at different plants you can put in

their place. If you vegetable garden, plan the next year’s vegetable garden. Order your seeds and plan how you will plant them. In my area, the worst winter weather is in January and February. Both months are a time to start seeds inside and nurture part of your garden while you can’t go outside.

What is your favorite way to repurpose items in your garden?  Walk around at garage sales or even your own back yard, and you may surprise yourself with possibilities.
