The Ruby Young Elementary garden is an important part of the school’s mission, which is “to develop all students to become active lifelong learners and productive citizens in a global society”. It started in 1994 with only four raised beds. With the help of Master Gardeners, it has grown into a large garden with twenty raised beds for flowers and vegetables, a pond, a small orchard, a greenhouse and a medicinal garden. The butterfly garden is a certified Monarch Waystation.
Master Gardeners teach students in grades 3-8 how to grow vegetables and ornamental plants. On Fridays all classes enjoy being outside working in the garden. Lessons emphasize science concepts that students are learning in the classroom, such as the parts of plants, the life cycle of a plant, and related vocabulary words. Students take turns planting seeds, weeding, and harvesting. They are encouraged to try gardening at home and sharing some of their produce with those in need is stressed.
Each Tuesday during the school year Master Gardeners work in the garden from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. Our goal for 2022 is to improve our bird observation station. There is always something to do in the garden. If you’re interested in getting your hands dirty and getting close to nature, please come join us.
